It is the southernmost city in Egypt, located at the first cataract of the Nile. In ancient times Aswan was the port of arrival for all types of merchandise, from gold to ivory, wood and spices.
On the islands there are temples and on both shores, remains of towns and cities, ancient quarries and the gateway to the mythical Nubia. The city is known both for its dam and for being the starting point to visit the Temple of Abu Simbel, it is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places in Egypt. Elephantine Island and Philae Island, one of the main attractions in Aswan, can also be accessed by sailing felucca or motor boat.
