Ancient Thebes was the capital of ancient Egypt for more than 1,500 years. On the banks of the Nile River, it is known as the City of a Hundred Gates and contains most of the monuments to the pharaohs.
Luxor is the city with the largest number of monuments in Egypt. Among the most notable are the Temple of Luxor, the Temple of Karnak, the Temple of Hatshpsut, the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and the Colossi of Memnon.
